AI in Game Development

Christoffer Holmgard

(he/him)

Co-Founder & CEO at modl.ai

Christoffer formed his first game development company with Benedikte Mikkelsen in 2008, Duck and Cover Games, focusing on learning games. In 2011, Christoffer co-founded the award-winning studio Die Gute Fabrik, leading the studio as Managing Director, today serving as the Chair of the Board. During his tenure, the studio shipped multiple games on PC, Mac, mobile, and console platforms, securing more than 22 industry nominations and awards, including the GDC Innovation Award and the IndieCade Grand Jury Award.

In parallel with his game industry work, Christoffer worked in statistics, psychometrics, and organizational psychology with the Royal Danish Defence College from 2004 until 2011, maintaining the Danish National Draft Board Intelligence Test and conducting psychometric assessments of Special Forces operatives, fighter pilots, and officers, and supporting Danish veterans. This led to a research interest in behavioral modeling and eventually artificial intelligence, which he pursued working with various of modl.ai’s co-founders at the IT University of Copenhagen, University of Malta, and New York University. Before starting modl.ai, Christoffer served as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Northeastern University and the Head of their Master’s program in Game Science and Design, all while operating Die Gute Fabrik.

In modl.ai, Christoffer bridges a deep understanding of game development processes and technology with the possibilities and limitations of modern artificial intelligence. In leading and building modl.ai, he leverages his experience from Die Gute Fabrik and his background in organizational psychology.

Christoffer holds a BA degree in Psychology from the University of Copenhagen and an MSc in Media Technology from the IT University of Copenhagen. In 2015, Christoffer earned a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence and Procedural Content Generation from the IT University of Copenhagen and a post-doctorate in Game Engineering from New York University.
